Bright blue skies, white picket fences, American flags flying from every home and business, kids waving sparklers and holding dripping ice cream cones — if it sounds like the picture-perfect Fourth of July, you’re right. The best thing is, you don’t have to travel back in time to find this small-town festival, it’s just outside Winston-Salem in the town of Lewisville.
On Thursday, July 4, the festivities will occur in and around Shallowford Square, the central gathering spot for the community of Lewisville. Bring a blanket and a lawn chair and hang out. Live music starts at 6:30, with the 80s tribute band Kids in America. Then at dark, fireworks light up the sky.
Lewisville was incorporated in 1991, by a group of people dedicated to keeping the small-town atmosphere entrenched in the area even as the city of Winston-Salem grew. That group of men and women who worked hard to preserve the way of life in their town also had the foresight to plan for a future filled with community gatherings. The first town manager had a vision of a town square, and the town council followed through by building Shallowford Square.
Today, the square serves not only as the location for one of the biggest Fourth of July celebrations in Forsyth County, but also a gathering place for community events, the location for outdoor movies and concerts throughout the summer, the town’s Halloween festival and the Christmas tree lighting in winter.
Lewisville is a great place to visit, whether you’re taking in one of the community events or eating at one of the locally-owned restaurants, but it’s also a great place to live. Good schools, great resources and a convenient location just minutes from Winston-Salem make it a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Lewisville Elementary School provides a perfect small-town, community-supported education for kids in the area, and as part of Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools it has a great reputation. The Lewisville Library, opened in 2007, provides a convenient location for storytimes, summer reading programs and other great library events. Wake Forest Medical Health and Novant Health also have practices and urgent care facilities close by, so you and your family can maintain a safe and healthy lifestyle.
